Trusting the Inner Guidance You Were Taught to Ignore

The Voice You Were Told Not to Trust

There was a time in my life when I did not trust myself. Not my instincts. Not my gut. Not the quiet inner knowing that rose up when something didn’t feel aligned. I had been taught that listening to your inner voice could lead you astray. That your heart was unreliable. That guidance came from outside you — not within you.

So when that subtle internal whisper began speaking louder in adulthood, I questioned it. I second-guessed it. I tried to override it with logic. And then, slowly, I began following it anyway. That decision changed everything.

Most parents I work with can identify a similar moment — the moment something inside them says, “This isn’t right,” or “There has to be another way.” That voice rarely shouts. It nudges. It may feel like tension in your stomach, expansion in your chest, or clarity that makes no logical sense. We override it because we were trained to. But inner guidance does not disappear simply because it was ignored. It waits.

What If Nothing Was Wrong With You?

What if your sensitivity was never weakness? What if your need for rest was not laziness? What if your emotional depth was not “too much,” and your resistance to control was not rebellion?

Over time, as I began studying energetic differences and understanding that people are wired differently, something shifted inside me. I felt relief. Not because I found another label, but because I realized variation is natural.

Some people have steady energy that carries them all day. Others move in cycles and require renewal. Some process deeply before responding. Others respond instinctively and regulate through movement. None of these traits are defects. They are design differences.

Many of us were disciplined for traits that were simply part of our wiring. We learned to override ourselves in order to belong. And then we became parents — often without realizing we were asking our children to do the same.

Understanding temperament and energetic differences can bring enormous relief to parents who were once labeled incorrectly.

When Design Meets Parenting

If you were raised in a generation that valued sameness over individuality, you likely adapted. You may have learned to push through exhaustion, silence emotion, ignore intuition, or perform strength.

Then you had a child.

And that child may not be wired like you — or they may be wired exactly like you but without the suppression. Children frequently express what parents were taught to hide. That is where tension can surface.

But when you begin trusting your own inner guidance again, something changes. You stop forcing conformity. You begin observing instead of correcting. You ask different questions. You respond instead of react.

And your child feels that shift.

Reiki Strengthens Inner Clarity

This is where Reiki becomes deeply supportive.

When you practice self-Reiki consistently, your nervous system steadies. Mental noise decreases. Emotional intensity softens. In that quieter internal space, guidance becomes clearer.

Reiki does not give you intuition. It clears what was blocking it.

As stored tension releases, you begin noticing what feels aligned and what does not. You recognize when a reaction is coming from fear rather than wisdom. You pause more easily. You choose more consciously.

That steadiness is not theoretical. It is embodied.

And children absorb embodied steadiness long before they understand it.

If you want to deepen your personal Reiki practice before guiding your children, you can explore how self-Reiki becomes spiritual healing in everyday life. https://wendylynnjohnson.com/self-reiki-is-more-than-calming-it-is-spiritual-healing/

Teaching Children to Trust Themselves

When parents reclaim their inner voice, children learn that listening inward is safe. It is not rebellion. It is not irresponsibility. It is discernment.

When a child grows up in a home where rest is honored, emotions are allowed, and energetic differences are respected, they do not have to heal later from being told they were wrong for how they are wired.

That is prevention.

That is generational healing before trauma forms.

Closing Reflection

If you have spent years ignoring your inner guidance, you are not behind. You were surviving with the tools you had. But if something inside you is stirring now — a pull toward alignment, energy awareness, or spiritual reconnection — that voice is not new.

It has been there all along.

You are simply ready to hear it.

And when you begin trusting it again, your children learn they can trust themselves too.
